ABSTRACT

Many philosophers, theologians, playwrights, novelists, and academics have pondered the importance of stories and storytelling. Cultural Theory (CT) is an approach to understanding culture initially developed by the late Mary Douglas and Aaron Wildavsky. This chapter details the approach to culture that the authors leverage for this study and how it might be applied to understand climate change in a Norwegian context. It has also been used extensively to study climate change, particularly the relationship cultural narratives have with different cultural types. The authors believe that the attention to syntactic and semantic details in experiments such as the one undertaken here contributes to a level of precision that is useful both when constructing narratives for experimental purposes and when analyzing the data. If the world continues with greenhouse gas emissions like today, changes in climate for Norway will include extreme increases in rainfall and dramatic sea level rises.
