ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the several European funded projects dedicated to Responsible Innovation and Research (RRI), which have been promoting this new conception and enrolling numerous and different kinds of actors. The European Commission's RRI research calls are part of the former Science and Society programme. Incidentally, this is not typical of European research. The concern is an international one. The relationship between science and society has moved towards closer cooperation, expressed in the new name for the programme: Science for and with Society. Besides, we also find differences between academic RRI research and science policy actors' expectations. Furthermore, RRI is understood differently and implemented according to the territory: national, European or international. Both innovation and responsibility are probably closer than people may realize, feeding each other and addressing mutual requirements. Responsibility has to be innovative too: both constructive and critical.
