ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a rubric model for citizen science (CS) projects to assess the acquisition of competencies in schools. It tests the tool in five different CS projects in a common way and presents the results of these rubrics. The five projects are: Plant*tes, Bee-Path, Mosquito Alert, Observadors del Mar, and RIU.net. The inquiry-based learning approach fits into five CS projects since, they all build knowledge, skills and attitudes through hands-on learning activities. The CS activities allowed students to participate actively in all the steps that define a scientific investigation and in some cases the activity was entirely designed by the students. The information and communication technologies (ICT) competencies are necessary for a safe and critical use of technologies for different purposes. All school groups developed tasks related to these categories, with exception of Bee-Path and Mosquito Alert – school groups which did not include the use of ICT in the final product process during their work in class.
