ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to encourage acceptance of the vision of zero harm, a significant innovation in safety thinking, and to make an informed plea for dedicated research efforts geared towards its benefits and limitations within the construction industry context. By moving towards a zero harm vision that works for the construction industry, the industry can then start to make real differences in the health, safety, and well-being of the people in construction. The chapter offers some critical insights and considerations that can facilitate both the implementation and even perhaps the ultimate attainment of zero harm. It proposes that the construction industry seeks to realise a zero harm vision to bring collaboration to the resolution of industry problems. The zero harm vision needs to inspire real change in practice, to support the development of a generative positive safety culture, and to communicate this and seek engagement on the site, throughout the organisation, and all along its supply chains.
