ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies issues of skills' shortage due to the ageing of the workforce and evolves a viable road map to address issues facing the construction industry. It presents the demographics of ageing and the ageing of the workforce, and reviews the skills' shortage in the construction industry. The chapter shows the roadmap that can be used as a vehicle to mitigate the imbalance between the supply of and demand for skills in the construction industry due to the ageing of the workforce. It addresses the shortage of skilled labour in the construction industry, as well as limitations and opportunities for future research. The chapter outlines the findings from the desk research data collection and content analysis. The following themes emerged from the content analysis: a mis-match between the demand for and supply of workforce; other issues such as training, health risk, employer attitudes and risks associated with employing an aged workforce; and innovation of construction techniques and construction material.
