ABSTRACT

I first met Patrick McAuslan in June 1961 at the corner of Russell Square nearest to School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and Birkbeck. Along with AB Weston, our dean, we were the first three members not only of the law school, but also of University College Dar es Salaam (hereafter UCD). In the ensuing years we were joined by, among others, Nkambo Mugerwa, Aki Sawyerr, Yash Ghai, Jim Reid, and Sol Picciotto. Patrick McAuslan and I maintained contact until his death, not only as colleagues at Dar, Warwick and London, but also as academics with overlapping interests and, of course, as friends.
