ABSTRACT

Study of the motets published or copied together with Iberian Requiem Masses reveals a contrast in practice between the Iberian world and Italy, particularly with regard to Elevation motets. The Eucharistic themes predominant in motets embedded with Italian Requiems are not represented among the relevant Iberian motets, where pro mortuis texts are the norm at this point at Mass. This may reflect a wider tendency in the Iberian context to treat Elevation motets as ‘proper’. Motets placed after Masses display a close association with responsories for the Absolution. The most famous of these works, Victoria’s Versa est in luctum, is shown to be related to a hitherto unstudied setting by Guerrero.
