ABSTRACT

We have suggested that this book can be read as an atlas of possibilities. An atlas is not an almanac: it does not try to predict the future. And, while we remain uncertain about many things, we are convinced that road work is ahead. In this concluding chapter, we present an overview of key questions related to the future of food systems and identify where we can find hints of answers in this book. The resulting table can serve as a guide for readers who wish to engage with content addressing particular questions. From there, we reflect on how this book is not only a collection of solutions, but also on how it aims to be part of a solution by challenging a lack of diversity, a tendency to research in silos, and the continued prevalence of binary thinking. After reflecting on each of these issues, we make a case for why multidisciplinary research is important and why we need to get much better at listening, especially to voices outside of our own echo chambers. We conclude by reviewing the main practices that the contributing authors felt were needed for their solution to succeed, specifically place-based approaches, participation, flexibility, learning, equity, and sustainability.
