ABSTRACT

This chapter looks specifically at the role of institutional leaders who constitute an extremely significant lever for ensuring inclusion in higher education. Higher education in South Africa post-apartheid has been slowly making changes in terms of governance, unification of the sector, diversification of the student cohort and, to a lesser extent, diversification of the staff cohort at an aggregated level. Inclusion is understood both in terms of the process of teaching and learning, as well as the outcome, not unlike a distinction between teaching for social justice, and teaching in a socially just manner. One should also respect the diversity of views and cultures: "make sure leaders embrace the diversity of the student population, recognise they bring certain knowledges, lived experiences, dip into the tapestry to create a rich experience, make sure they are recognised and they are affirmed".
