ABSTRACT

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has a vision statement which is captured in the title of this chapter. It is pithy and precise, known by every staff member of the university, and it has two distinct elements: an aspirational one which gestures towards the future of its academic position and status on the continent of Africa while also capturing its African corporate identity, and an ethical element which describes Unisa's avowed intention to serve people. As is well known, however, organizational mantras are often glibly recited at public events, graduation ceremonies and in conference papers with little relation to, or impact on, their lived reality. This chapter casts an uncompromising gaze upon Unisa's intentions and ideals in relation to its current organizational culture in order to uncover its manifold complexity and test its declared ethics, framed as inclusive practice, as a university that serves its staff and students as well as the wider community on the African continent.
