ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the brief history of the school counseling profession and current trends. It examines background information on comprehensive school counseling programs, including direct and indirect student services and accountability. The chapter also discusses the unique roles of school counselors at each of the three levels—elementary, middle and high school. It also examines the three domains in which school counselors focus their time and energy: Academic, career, and social/emotional. The chapter describes the history of school counseling and school counselors' roles in implementing a comprehensive school counseling program through direct and indirect student services, data and accountability, and crisis response. "Social–Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions".
