ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the role of counselors who provide a core set of services to children and adolescents in an effort to promote their optimal development and functioning. It identifies interventions utilized to meet the mental health and developmental needs of children and adolescents. Clinical mental health counselors provide a core set of services to children and adolescents to promote their optimal development and functioning. Individually, counselors within an agency setting often utilize their personal practice theory when working with clients, though some systems of care may characteristically implement any number of evidence-supportive practices dictated by funding sources or third-party payers. As children develop, their focus of relationships shifts from parents to peers, which makes group interventions an effective resource for skill development, socialization, and normalization of experiences with mental health symptoms and developmental issues. Hospice care is a team approach to delivering services needed by an individual with a limited life expectancy and his or her support system.
