ABSTRACT

While angels are a common topic of discussion in early Jewish literature, one might consider cases of demons to be exceptional. Yet, multiple demons appear in the Hebrew Bible apparently as angels acting under God’s orders, and various demons appear in I and II Enoch, The Book of Jubilees and The Apocalypse of Abraham, as well. This chapter will explore specifically the demons of seduction that appear in the early Hebrew Bible and in the “Watcher” tradition. I will argue that the seducer demons represent much more than object lessons; like other demons in the early Jewish worldview, their roles are complex and cover a wide range of motivations.
