ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews a series of core components of high-performing enterprise performance management (EPM) and explores the ways companies are improving their business planning capability. Top performers studied by The Hackett Group focus on the aggressive reduction of EPM complexity within the context, along with the simultaneous embrace of new waves of digital capability that can yield greater insights to the business. The EPM cycle involves the reporting of actual performance across the business, often the formalized reviews of each part of the portfolio on a monthly basis, and what mechanisms are used to determine how to close gaps that have arisen between actuals and planned commitments. The chapter focuses on the greatest impact on EPM capability: technology, analytics and information management, and human capital. A key ingredient for a more effective planning process is the availability of the right tools and technical infrastructure to integrate information from disparate sources.
