ABSTRACT

Hidden hunger affects over two billion people worldwide and in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, where more than 50% of the population lives below the poverty line, it is significant health challenge. While households may have access to sufficient food to meet their caloric requirements, their diets are often poor quality. As a result, many people fail to consume adequate vitamins and minerals, leaving them at high risk of micronutrient deficiencies. In Cabo Delgado, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), an international NGO, has been implementing such a program since 2009. This chapter outlines many of the current food security and malnutrition issues faced by the people of Cabo Delgado Province, as well as the rural development initiative implemented by the AKF in the region. Findings of the research are then discussed in the context of the broad malnutrition and food insecurity issues that face many populations around the world as well as other research that has been conducted on home gardening practices and interventions.
