ABSTRACT

The new historian, the genealogist, will know what to make of this masquerade. He will not be too serious to enjoy it; on the contrary, he will push the masquerade to its limits and prepare the great carnival of time where masks are constantly reappearing. The research group "Religious Pluralism" in the Theological Faculty of Leiden University has committed itself to investigating religious interaction in pluralistic societies, marked by the presence of a variety of religions whose adherents are living adjacent to one another. One particular social network for many migrant communities in the Bijlmer is formed by the religious organizations, of which there were some 35 different ones in 1992. To date, the lack of space to worship on Sundays and to engage in community-building activities during the week is one of the most pressing problems for the African Christian communities in the Bijlmer.
