ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the initiatives and counter-movement strategies adopted by the corporate sector in response to the rise of environmental movements in Asia. Taking a comparative perspective, this chapter emphasizes that environmental movements emerge not in socioeconomic vacuums but are embedded within and responsive to the processes of economic development. Moreover, the differential trajectories of environmental movements are influenced by pro– or counter-movement strategies adopted by business corporations (ranging 270from large national or transnational corporations, TNCs, to small and medium enterprises, SMEs) and their collective representations such as the Chambers of Commerce and Federations of Industries.
