ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the development of the study of East, South, and Southeast Asian languages in the United States. It discusses the various ways a liberal arts college can organize an Asian language curriculum. Academic institutions benefit when the study of Asian languages and cultures is part of the curriculum. Asian language study also stimulates intellectual development in unique ways. The start of World War II initiated a period wherein world events increased interest in teaching and learning Asian languages, mostly Japanese and Chinese, in the United States. When deciding which language to offer, the fact that Chinese and Japanese are the most commonly taught Asian languages in the United States should be considered. Summer courses are programs of intensive study of an Asian language conducted in an immersion environment. Internships can be very helpful in building enthusiasm for Asian language study.
