ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores both past and contemporary ground-breaking theoretical work and new and exciting research, debate and argument relating to Chinese urbanism. Critical Chinese urbanism for the twenty-first century needs to interrogate the similarities, differences, connectivities, territorialities and relationalities of urban life. Chinese theorists and scholars of urban China must thus inspire and challenge within and beyond universities by theorising, researching and writing about cities in China and by paying attention to the ways in which Chinese urbanism exists in cities throughout the world. Chinese urbanists must continue to respond to the challenge of asserting how critical perspectives capture complexity and diversity, draw on rich intellectual traditions of creative and innovative thinking from around the world, and keep pace with the ongoing development of the urban experience.
