ABSTRACT

This double-paneled promotional poster was displayed by Britain’s Empire Marketing Board from December 1930 to January 1931. It is notable for its before and after representation of the development of transportation, economy, and society in East Africa under British rule. The first panel shows East Africans on the move prior to European colonialism. The second panel shows the obvious economic benefits Europeans brought to East Africa. The presence of mechanized transport, bridges, and vibrant trade is immediately noticeable.
