ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on classrooms where teachers plan for pupils with English as an Additional Language in order to portray how a language-rich classroom can be established in a concrete context that very many teachers already understand because it is part of their everyday practice. It shows that how learners who might have only a small amount of target language at their disposal can use it creatively and routinely in the languages classroom. The chapter explores how primary school children develop pronunciation skills in French through collaborative storytelling on the iPad app iTEO. It shows how pupils in a Year 6 class who produce stories in French with iTEO develop their pronunciation skills. The chapter draws on work by Craft about creativity in the digital age and explores game-based learning as a creative context for Content and Language Integrated Learning.
