ABSTRACT
In recent years, European countries have given up explicit multicultural policies and come to favour assimilation. This claim is substantiated by Angela Merkel’s affirmation that multiculturalism has failed. However, the demographic fact of multiculturalism remains. Scholars feel obliged to reflect upon the basic presumptions and principles of multiculturalism and to seek fresh alternatives as well as theoretical reconstruction.
