ABSTRACT

When Movietonews, Inc. released the last issue of Fox Movietone News in September 1963, the company closed the doors on a newsreel operation in continuous release since 1919. Its offices housed a legendary card catalog system capable of identifying film of practically any subject or any prominent person of the twentieth century. The portion retained by 20th Century Fox continued to be licensed from Movietonews, Inc. offices but access remained tied to index cards and printed finding aids available only onsite. Using Fox story numbers allows researchers to confidently reference materials whether at National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC), or in New York. MIRC's Reference Catalog and DVR should be used in concert to search for materials. The Reference Catalog provides access to the entirety of MIRC's Fox holdings and usefully enables researchers to search Fox News only, Fox Movietone News only, or both.
