ABSTRACT

Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC) at the University of South Carolina houses rich local television newsfilm collections from three South Carolina stations: WIS-TV, WLTX-TV, and WBTW-TV. The WIS-TV and WLTX-TV collections come from two of South Carolina's oldest broadcast stations, both out of Columbia. WBTW-TV is based in Florence. This broad geographical coverage forms a picture of a large part of South Carolina in the mid-twentieth century, including one small city and the state capital. WIS is MIRC's largest local TV collection with approximately 1.5 million feet of film. It includes outtakes from daily news broadcasts, and outtakes for two news magazines: Awareness and Carolina Magazine. MIRC's TV newsfilm collections present cataloging and access challenges similar to those facing the KTLA Collection at University of California, Los Angeles. Fortunately, the WIS donation included a card catalog, used in creating basic records.
