ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of a Chinese Online Self-assessment (COS) system for Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learning and teaching which was developed to improve CFL students' grammar competence and independent learning based on dynamic assessment (DA) theory. Meanwhile, literature shows that online language learning (OLL) has the potential for encouraging learner autonomy which is essential to the success of language learning. The chapter presents the research questions and data collection procedure used to evaluate an online DA system, the COS system implemented in Moodle, which was developed to improve the learning and teaching of CFL grammar in a British university. The purpose of building the COS system was to find a better way of maximising classroom teaching, so that teachers have more time to focus on interactive skills in the classroom, which the students appreciate most.
