ABSTRACT

Using formative and summative assessment as a guide, readers learn how to use both course-specific assessment (rubrics, tests) and student development assessment across program participation. It is important to create learning objectives that inform students about what they will be learning in any given week or any given course and that also serve as benchmarks from which instructors assess students’ progress. Rubrics serve as scoring tools for assessments and a set of criteria and standards that are linked to learning objectives. Rubrics help students set goals and assume responsibility for their learning and answer the student’s questions—“How do I earn an A on this project?” or “Why did I earn a B on this paper?” This chapter explores rubrics as a potential formative and summative assessment tool, the importance of feedback, and the role of formative and summative feedback in the teaching and learning process.
