ABSTRACT

Conceptualizing what you are teaching and how you will teach it prior to the start of a course will ensure optimal learning. A large part of this preparation requires that the instructor develop learning objectives for the course. Before you can determine how you will approach the topic, you must also consider the practical element of what skill or information you want students to take away from the experience. For adult learners, learning at the higher levels of cognitive reasoning is dependent on having attained prerequisite knowledge and skills at lower levels. As a counselor educator, Bloom’s taxonomy can serve as a guide to assist in establishing developmentally appropriate learning outcomes for students. This chapter will synthesize Bloom’s taxonomy with the development of learning objectives.
