ABSTRACT

Numerous trials have demonstrated that cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis (CBTp) can reduce psychotic symptoms and the associated distress, as well as assisting individuals with psychosis in their recovery by improving their understanding and management of their mental health. Although most meta-analyses include some group CBTp trials, there have been more studies pertaining to individual CBTp than to group CBTp, and therefore less is known about the specific outcomes of group CBTp studies. As with other group interventions, many of Yalom and Leszcz's essential therapeutic elements need to be present in group CBTp. In fact, group CBTp is so positively oriented that one of its essential therapeutic elements is to have a pleasurable experience. Although difficult experiences and themes are addressed, this is done carefully in order to ensure that participants leave each session feeling okay, or better than when they arrived.
