ABSTRACT

Beginning in Mayor Becker’s 2012 State of the City Address, Salt Lake City government identified livability as a way to unify and frame policies and discussions and to determine success of those policies and programs. Mayor Ralph Becker and his administration focused on the following elements to promote a livable city: social equality, public safety, access to and protection of natural areas and recreational opportunities, ease of mobility, efficient and accountable use of taxpayer money, urban agricultural opportunities, strong education systems, a healthy downtown and neighborhoods, and diverse arts and cultural offerings. This chapter will identify these polices and their metrics for success and review the identified areas to reflect the progress made in Salt Lake City during the Becker administration.
