ABSTRACT

This chapter expands the notion of practice-based research to practice-based scholarship, or the contribution to the field that can involve the direct collection and analysis of data for a research report, writing a review article that synthesizes research or advances a theory, writing or editing a book, or training personnel who are part of a research team. First, the author describes her venture into practice-based scholarship and the array of practice-based scholarship opportunities that she has pursued throughout her career. Next, specific types of practice-based scholarship are described, including collaborations with investigators at research institutions, analyses of archival data, supervision of clinicians in research studies, conducting a meta-analysis, writing review articles and reviews of books, authoring or editing books, and blogging. Third, barriers and solutions to initiating and executing practice-based scholarship are considered. The chapter ends with overarching themes of which to be mindful in the pursuit of practice-based scholarship opportunities.
