ABSTRACT

This chapter explores feminist war theorizing from both sides of security studies and feminist security. It begins with feminist 'takes' on traditional war theorizing. Feminist war theorizing is not something static in books, or in snapshots, or in lists of commonalities. It is something vibrant, alive, moving, and changing. The chapter considers what might look different about war theorizing that puts feminism first. It describes the implications of the former – how foregrounding feminism in the analysis of war has been able to change the terms of the debate. A way that foregrounding feminisms in war theorizing has a unique intellectual footprint is that thinking about gender in war and conflict often opens up war theorizing to a host of concerns that traditional war theorists did not find relevant. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the history and trajectory of feminist war theorizing.
