Government Information and Leaks
ABSTRACT Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms provide the opportunity for government to communicate quickly and freely with citizens, but at the same time the technology provides new temptations for officials to conduct the public’s business in secret. This chapter examines the implications of social media in government and public record laws. Also, social media outlets, such as WikiLeaks, offer the potential of quickly disseminating records, including classified documents, that the government doesn’t want out. The chapter ends with best practices for government and information seekers in dealing with social media and public records.
