Social Media Use in Courtrooms

ByCathy Packer

ABSTRACT News reporters want to blog and tweet from courtrooms. Jurors are blogging and tweeting about cases and searching the Internet for information about cases they sit on, including the applicable laws and the parties involved. This chapter examines how the rules governing the use of cameras in the courtroom apply to computers and smartphones; how courts are handling juror issues; the implications of federal, state, and local rules on courtroom technology use; and what rights journalists have to use social media to cover trials.
