ABSTRACT

All secure children's homes (SCHs) in England and Wales meet regularly and are in contact with each other through the Secure Accommodation Education Network. This chapter presents case examples of some of the SCHs in the network and the work taking place with learners. Aldine house was purpose designed and built as a secure children's home and opened in February 1997. Aldine House currently accommodates a maximum of eight children, male and female, between the ages of 10 and 17. The Atkinson Children's Home is a small secure home which presently has capacity for 10 young people, rising to 12 after April 2018. The secure children's home is a medium sized, female welfare only unit. The average length of stay is 181 days and the average age of those placed is 16 years. Lansdowne is a local authority run home in East Sussex. It is modern, purpose-built, and physically secure.
