This surgical procedure can be traced back to Egyptian times. It is also written that Alexander the Great was supposed to have used his sword to relieve a soldier’s upper airway obstruction. Hippocrates (a Greek physician) had also warned against the procedure, because of the risk of life-threatening haemorrhage from damage to the carotid arteries.
