ABSTRACT

This chapter compares the lifestyles of the families in the stories to see the environmental impact of their daily habits. The environmental footprints (EF) calculated include most of the factors included in other calculations except for the impact of eating fish, which makes only a small difference and only to some of the footprints. A significant reduction in the environmental impact of families with a high impact could be achieved through changes in lifestyle, but reductions are only valid if compared with families in the same country. The families' environmental impacts were first converted to hectares and then multiplied by the index for each country to derive the impact in global hectares. The New Zealand family scores very high in both the food and the energy categories, with the second largest impact for food and the highest score per person for domestic energy, leading to a very high overall environmental impact.
