ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to fill an analytical gap in the literature, by drawing attention to the specific vulnerabilities and subsequent needs lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) individuals and communities face in the refugee setting of Lebanon. At the micro-level, examining the violence against and shunning of LGBTI individuals can be revealing about the gendered ideologies and fears of the perpetrators. The chapter highlights many of the negative experiences and ongoing challenges, the discrimination against and persecution of LGBTI people in Syria itself but also in Lebanon, there are also positive findings. Given small sample sizes due to the limited scope of the study, the findings should not be taken as being a full survey of issues surrounding LGBTI refugees in Lebanon, but rather as an initial, indicative study which will hopefully lead to and catalyse further, broader and more in-depth research.
