ABSTRACT
It is seemingly oxymoronic combination of intense tuition and relaxed informality, interspersed with a good deal of laughter, which makes Julien's sessions so fascinating to observe; being able to successfully combine these apparently incongruent features is perhaps crucial to her success and is explored throughout this chapter. It explores the ways in which Julien manages the delivery of her lessons, looking firstly at how her practice is situated within the institution, secondly at the in-depth pedagogical techniques that she employs and finally at how she manages to alleviate some of the potential pressure of the one-to-one situation and develop a more relaxed, informal atmosphere. In order to support the student's personal development, Julien frequently initiated reflective conversation during the sessions. By having a clear split between the professional development training, which takes place externally to Julien's own personal teaching practice, and her own vocal tuition, she was able to assume a greater sense of autonomy and freedom within her sessions.
