ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that life experience and a quest for answers can be as effective in determining pedagogy as institutional experiences of learning. Pete's pedagogy draws from different musical traditions as found in Voice Camps, in playing for Circle Dance and from the influence from specific leaders of musical traditions. While Pete planned his choir sessions, the choirs had input into their choice of song and also in the planning of concert times and locations. Each session begins with a warm up, which had a very distinct style in Pete's work. There was a myriad of influences on Pete's warm up styles. His own experience of the physicality of sound initially came from an experience he had in the church choir. Pete's choirs all learnt orally, the focus being on learning to listen, to retain the lyrics and melody. When teaching new songs, Pete's pedagogy tended towards transmission teaching, his chosen method often being that of demonstration and imitation.
