ABSTRACT

Jane teaches in a Sixth Form College. Her enthusiasm for music came from her father, who used to play the piano when she was a child. Jane's is a Further Education college, which also admits some part-time adult students. It is situated in a city that is in the bottom third of local authorities on the UK Government's index of deprivation. Jane's classroom is the largest, comfortably accommodating a choir of over 40 people. When she is teaching lessons tables are arranged in a rectangle, with Jane at the head and the students around the outside. Behind Jane's desk are a whiteboard and projector, a hi-fi and a grand piano. Jane's preferred mode of teaching involves sequences of questions, usually by her, and answers, usually by the students. The initiation-response-feedback (IRF) sequences are varied by Jane's use of music. Frequently, she communicates music by either singing or playing a musical recording or playing the piano.
