ABSTRACT

Claire feels passionate about giving all children the opportunity to learn music. She tells that music is also used as a calming influence, particularly with the younger children further down the school, to help the transition from one activity to another. Claire works in a general purpose classroom, but some of the music performance takes place in the church building. The classroom is brightly decorated with children's work and with memory aids for literacy, numeracy and historical events. At the end of the day, she encourages the children to sing a prayer about something they are thankful about. Claire used a number of pedagogical strategies within her teaching. She used demonstration in both the choir rehearsal and the drumming session. Claire's purpose for her music sessions was to evoke enjoyment in music, improve confidence through collaborative performance and also to ensure the children had a basic understanding of music theory. Claire's pedagogy was one of inclusion, encouragement and creativity.
