ABSTRACT

In 1970, nine top-ranked tennis players joined together for the common cause of advocating for equal prize money for women in professional tennis. This collective, known as the “Original 9”, were: Jane “Peaches” Bartkowicz, Rosemary Casals, Judy Tegart Dalton, Julie Heldman, Billie Jean King, Kristy Pigeon, Kerry Melville Reid, Nancy Richey and Valerie Zeigenfuss. They joined together to pressure the governing bodies of tennis to offer equitable pay and access to tournaments for women as they did for men.
