ABSTRACT

My primary goal for compiling an annotated catalogue of music in TGOP is its practical usefulness as a research tool and as a guide to further reading for scholars and readers interested in musical content found in non-specialized periodical literature of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Nineteenth-century British periodicals for girls and women offer a wealth of material in which to understand not only what information and activities publishers considered important for their readers but also what readers themselves considered important in their lives. Taken together, these two perspectives give a revealing picture of how girls and women fit into their social and cultural worlds. One of these activities, music making, has been the focus of research that uses periodicals as source material, and TGOP is among the magazines consulted.
