ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the importance of persuasive presentations in the life. General purpose statements are statements about the reason for the speech. Basically, the general purpose statement expresses the overall goal of the appeal. The general purpose will be either to inform or to persuade. Specific purpose statements are the exact goals of the presentation. Specific purpose statements contain both the general topic and the general purpose. Persuasive presentations seek to shift or change the audience's attitudes, beliefs, or values. A cause-and-effect pattern of organization addresses a topic in terms of the cause-and-effect relationship. For instance, getting the audience to consider the cause of a problem and examining the effects on society might be the best way to organize the persuasive presentation for some types of topics. A problem-solution pattern of organization involves taking on a problem and presenting a solution. Monroe's motivated sequence is a common organizational pattern used in the design and delivery of persuasive presentations.
