ABSTRACT

Big Data is a relatively new term and concept by some definitions, but a long-evolving term when viewed from a broader perspective. The history of Big Data is as nebulous as its definition. S. Lohr acknowledged 2012 as being the first point of wide scale recognition of the importance of Big Data. Unlike many other communication technologies, Big Data is not one particular product category, set of tools, or technological development. Some industry developments and uses of Big Data can help us gain a better understanding of Big Data as it applies to communication technology. Big Data is being used by manufacturing, retail, industry, government, healthcare, banking and education. One of the biggest current challenges for Big Data analytics is the limited number of people in the United States with the necessary skills to do the job.
