ABSTRACT

Like most coral reef systems, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) faces a number of extensional threats that are principally anthropogenic in nature. The management of the GBR is undertaken by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority which has introduced a range of innovative management practices. In recognition of the importance of the GBR as both an ecological system and as a key tourism asset, the public sector has allocated considerable funding for scientific research. This chapter overviews the management of the GBR, the threats it faces and the strategies that have been implemented to protect the reef. The chapter also discusses how the GBR is used as a tourism asset.
