Blackface in Italy Cultural Power Among Nations in the Era of Globalization

The striking prominence of images of African Americans in Italy’s public culture raises a question: What is the meaning of this prolific consumption of “blackness”? What can these cultural images tell us about relations of power and culture between nations in the era of transnational communication industries and, more generally, about processes of globalization? This chapter addresses the influence of “globalization” on national cultures. It investigates the particular case of cultural flows between the United States and Italy.
