Beyond the Madaba Plains Project: A Regional Approach to the Archaeology of the Madaba Plains Region

Introduction Among the Madaba Plains Project’s (MPP) many accomplishments, as one of the longestrunning active archaeological expeditions in the Middle East, arguably the most important has been its dedicated commitment to collaborative regional research. Though many projects, particularly surface surveys, have long endeavored to assemble regional data sets capable of addressing research questions that encompass broad spectrums of space and time, few have succeeded in producing more than superficial syntheses. The reasons are manifold, but invaria­ bly involve shortcomings with sampling strategies, field recovery methods, and recording systems, all areas in which the MPP has been an innovative leader.
