ABSTRACT

The traditional Chinese worldview argues that every ideal situation should have a balance between yang and yin, since these are the two most fundamental manifestations of the Dao literally "the Way", but understood as the Way the universe works, the ultimate cosmic principle, the vast and eternal mother of all things, and the principle at the heart of all transformations. To call Chinese religionists "believers" is to say they are claiming to take part in a relationship of "mutual trust" with another. When a Chinese visitor walks into a Daoist temple in modern China, after paying a small admission fee, they must first pass through the main gate building, at the south end of the temple complex. Although Confucianism forms the cultural DNA of China, it did not gain popularity until it was adopted as the official state policy in the early Han dynasty.
