ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the retro noughties in Bollywood cinema are as much about the 1970s as they are about the 2000s. The aesthetic legacies of 1970s Hindi films are extant through rich and diverse use and reinterpretation in the 2000s. The two noughties films that are taken up to illustrate and answer the above questions are Om Shanti Om and Delhi Belly. The retro feel was further achieved through the use of contemporary Computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology alongside practices from the 1970s, particularly where large numbers of hundreds or a thousand were needed as fans, crowds, and extras at film sets or at the premier of the film Dreamy Girl within Om Shanti Om. The title credits of Delhi Belly begin with an airline captain announcing the arrival of his aircraft into New Delhi's international airport. The notion of 'retro' usefully elaborated by Elizabeth Guffey allows us to come to terms with the modern past.
